Rosalyn Book Sleeve Pattern

Inspired by the look of pansies, this book sleeve is a perfect "dust jacket" for your tomes! Enjoy and let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for this free pattern <3

If you’d like to make a sleeve for a TALL book, iPad, or laptop, I recommend CH 48 instead of 36. You will have 5 DC clusters in the oval/bend parts instead of 3. Start the round the same way, but you’ll end with 3 DC clusters after the last pattern repeat instead of 1 cluster.

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn

5 mm hook

 

Shorthand Key:
CH chain

ST stitch

SC single crochet

PM place marker

SL ST slip stitch

DC double crochet

[ ] total stitches for the round

 

Important Notes:
SL ST does not count as a stitch.

CH 1 does not count as a stitch.

CH 2 does not count as a stitch.

****TIPS****

1. Make sure to carry your second color around the oval/bend areas of your sleeve. If you float them on the bends, they may pull straight across and this will cause issues when trying to insert a book/device into the sleeve.
2. Untangle/Untwist your yarn 1 or 2 times per color-changing round to prevent pesky tangles!
   

 

ROUND 1

CH 36. In second CH from hook, SC in the back bump and PM. SC x35 (in each CH).

Turn to the other side of the chain and work SC x35 in each CH across. I recommend carrying the tail end to weave it in as you work. SL ST to first SC of the round. [70]

ROUND 2

CH 1. SC all the way around. SL ST to first SC of the round. [70]

ROUND 3

CH 2. 3 DC (DC cluster) in first ST. Skip 2 ST. Repeat from * to * all the way around for a total of 24 DC clusters. SL ST to the top of the first DC of the round.

ROUND 4

SL ST over to the first space. CH 2. 3 DC in the space and switch to your secondary color. In the next space a DC cluster and switch back to your main color. Place 1 DC cluster in the next 2 spaces and switch back to your secondary color. *Main color DC cluster x2, Secondary color DC cluster x1* Repeat from * to * three more times. CARRY YOUR SECOND COLOR AROUND THE BEND - DO NOT FLOAT. Using your main color, place a DC cluster in the next space. Repeat from * to * all the way around. SL ST to the top of the first DC of the round and switch to your secondary color.

ROUND 5

SL ST to first space and CH 2. Place a DC cluster in the next TWO spaces and change to your main color. *Place a DC cluster in the next TWO spaces and change back to your main color. Place a DC cluster in the next space and change to your secondary color.* Repeat from * to * all the way around, making sure to carry your yarn around the bends. SL ST to the top of the first DC of the round

ROUND 6

SL ST to the first space and CH 2. Place a DC cluster and switch to your main color. Place a DC cluster in the next TWO spaces and switch to your secondary color. Repeat from * to * all the way around. DO NOT SWITCH TO SECONDARY COLOR AT THE END OF THE ROUND. SL ST to first DC of the round.

ROUND 7

SL ST to the first space and CH 2. Place a DC cluster in your main color all the way around. SL ST to the first DC of the round.

Repeat this pattern until you reach your desired width, taking note that the pattern will shift as we slip stitch around. Your flowers should stack on top of each other in a straight, vertical line.

At the beginning of Round 8, I began with TWO main color DC clusters instead of ONE.

At the start of Round 9, I put the DC cluster in the same ST that I slip stitched to.

At the start of Round 10, I also CH 2 and placed a DC cluster in the same ST that I slip stitched to.

I chose to make the full repeat of 4-7 two more times before finishing off with 3-5 few rows of SC.

On your last row of SC, SC 17, CH 12, SL ST into same ST, and SC the rest of the way around. Place a button on the opposing side of the loop, fasten off, and weave in ends!
